Views of Biologist about Life.

This is probably one of the most profound questions one can ask and one of the great mysteries he faces. The sciences have discovered that all living things are made of a material called protoplasm. They can create a chemical formula for protoplasm and take molecules of different elements and compounds to assemble them and make materials such as protoplasm. But the materials they make do not live! All you can do is examine living creatures on earth, in all their shapes and sizes and where they live, and find out what they have in common. Then we can say that these common qualities constitute life.
Let's see what are these qualities.
Growth
All living beings must be able to grow. They reach a fairly defined size and shape. A kitten becomes a cat; an acorn becomes an oak, etc. For some living beings, it takes little time to reach its true size but this is not the case of all living organisms; A redwood can take thousands of years.
Repairing
All living beings, being alive, can repair and replace parts of themselves. A lobster can grow a new claw. Humans can develop new skin or bones; The trees grow new leaves and branches.
Reproduction
Another common characteristic of living beings is the ability to reproduce. If this capacity did not exist, the living beings would have disappeared from Earth as they grew older and died. Animals, fish, birds, insects, plants, all produce products.
POINT TO PONDER: Viruses have all the qualities of non-living beings, but they can reproduce. For this reason, they are considered a link between living and non-living beings.
Environmental Adaptation
Living beings are able to adapt to the environment in which they live. Man can do better than any other creature because of his intellectual power. But plants can only do this in a limited way.
Response
Living beings can also respond to stimuli, which means that if something outside them affects them, they react. When we smell the food, we react; The flowers grow towards the light.
It does not tell you what life is, but it describes the qualities that must be considered alive.
